Joel-Broda

4th year center Joel Broda(6) is playing his first season as an unrestricted free agent after his 3-year entry level contract with Minnesota Wild was not qualified.

He signed a one-year minor league deal with Bakersfield Condors for 2013/2014, returning to the team he skated with on reassignment from Houston Aeros during his rookie season.

He played 124 AHL games through three seasons with the Aeros scoring 21 goals and 17 assists.

The 6′ 203 lbs. forward was an Oklahoma City Barons‘ training camp invite and impressed enough to score a call-up for 8 games near the start of the season, potting a goal and an assist quickly but then cooled off before being returned a month later.

He would get right to it in the ECHL, where he struck for 19 goals and 16 assists in 35 games.

His explosion on the score sheet gained him notice from Bridgeport Sound Tigers, who signed him to a pto and out of the gate he’s fitting right in with team chemistry.

Again, he scored early in his recall netting a pair of tallies and a helper in his first three contests.

Originally a Washington Capitals‘ 5th round pick in the 2008 draft (#144 overall), he had a notable junior hockey career scoring a league leading 53 goals in 2008/2009 and winning the WHL Championship with Calgary Hitmen in the following campaign.

The 24-year plays a speedy skating style, knows how to get himself into the open spaces on the ice for scoring chances and generally unloads a ton of shots on net.

His time with Bridgeport Sound Tigers would finish with the 2 goals and 4 assists in 17 games.

Released from his pto near the end of the regular season, he rejoined Bakersfield Condors as team captain for their playoff run, which last 16 games through the Kelly Cup Western Conference Finals.

Once again, he exploded on the score sheet potting 8 goals and 4 assists with a +5 rating in 16 playoff games.

His 2013/2014 performance was enough to put him on the radar of Hershey Bears, who signed him to an AHL contract roughly a month before training camps started.

Through 53 contests, he would have a somewhat rough campaign in Chocolatetown falling out of favor as he was mostly a healthy scratch down the stretch and throughout the Calder Cup Playoffs.

It was obvious his 7 goals and 3 assists fell far short of the mark.

For his 6th pro season he’s decided to take his game elsewhere, signing a one-year deal with HC Bolzano Foxes of Erte Banke Eishockey Liga.

The now 25-year old that will turn 26 a month into the new season should easily be able to duplicate the kind of numbers he put in the ECHL overseas.

Austin MadaiskyColumbus Blue Jackets‘ 5th round pick in the 2010 draft (#124 overall) defenseman Austin Madaisky(5) definitely ate lots of Wheaties in the off season.

In 15 AHL games with affiliate Springfield Falcons he’s already tied a career high 4 goals in a single season and  blown a huge hole in his previous assist mark (at 4) recently adding a 10th helper to his totals with a +4 rating.

This puts him on par to equal some pretty impressive numbers he posted in his final campaign of juniors in the WHL as an assistant captain with Kamloops Blazers. He had 37 assists in 2011/2012 and 20 in each of his previous two years.

All of this is perfect timing as the decently sized 6’2″ 205 lbs. blue liner is in the last season of his 3-year entry level deal and set to become a restricted free agent.

With his status moving towards rfa, the parent club wasted little time to make sure he was signed for another year with a two-way deal.

Makes sense as he blew the lid off his previous scoring totals recording 12 goals and 23 assists in a career high 53 AHL games before losing the remainder of the season to injury. He led all blue liner points in the league before going down.

Despite all the lost time he still managed to lead the Falcons‘ defense in goals, assists and points for 2014/2015.

If the 23-year old can stay healthy, the deep draft selection may just find himself spending a significant amount of time in the NHL.

He’s easily in line for the opportunity.

Tyler-Shattock

After four seasons in the St. Louis Blues‘ prospect system right wing Tyler Shattock(16) was not given a qualifying offer to continue with the team after putting up career best assists (16) and points (20) in the AHL with affiliate Chicago Wolves.

Originally a 4th round pick in the 2009 draft (#108 overall), he skated his first three seasons with then farm team Peoria Rivermen but was unable to replicate the numbers he achieved in four campaigns of the WHL, where he put up back-to-back more than a point-per-game totals first with Kamloops Blazers, then finishing out juniors with Calgary Hitmen.

The fairly big 6’3″ 200 lbs. forward was likely looking around for another contract but with no takers signed a one year minor league deal with Stockton Thunder and he has exploded on the score sheet.

He was already at least a bit familiar with the ECHL when he was reassigned for a brief stint early in 2012 with Evansville Icemen. Wasting little time connecting with the back of the net he scored 3 goals and 2 assists in 3 games and was quickly recalled.

Again, he got right to work with his new club and through 63 games has a team second 23 goals and a leading 39 assists and 62 points, while firing 141 shots on net and a new high 99 penalty minutes.

He was loaned temporarily for three games to Worcester Sharks earlier in the season but played more of an energy line, checking role and came away with no points.

The 25-year seems like he should be higher up on the hockey ladder than he is currently but it may be a better bet for him to take his game overseas for 2015/2016.

Cody Sylvester

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins‘ undrafted rookie center Cody Sylvester(12) netted ECHL Player Of The Week for March 10-16, his second time being selected this season.

In 43 games with Wheeling Nailers he has a solid 22 tallies and 16 assists with a +14 rating. He’s also unloaded a team third high total of 134 shots on goal.

The 5’11” 191 lbs. forward played 5 campaigns of junior hockey with Calgary Hitmen. He won the 2010 WHL Championship with them and took his scoring touch up a notch in the playoffs, which set up 2 years of more than point-per-game production in his final pair of seasons before turning pro. He also served as team captain as an over-age player.

He’s mostly been on reassignment since attending the first part of Pittsburgh Penguins training camp on an invite, then with the WBS.

He was recalled for almost a couple months of action in the higher league and played 17 AHL games, getting a pair of goals before being sent back down.

The 21-year old will likely be a key contributor to any potential Kelly Cup Playoff quest or rejoin the Baby Pens in their postseason run, but however his first year ends up, should return for another look next season or will find a new home to continue strengthen his overall game.

Brandon Kozun

Los Angeles Kings‘ 6th round pick in the 2009 draft (#179 overall), right wing Brandon Kozun(15) signed a qualifying offer to stay put in the prospect system for another year.

The small 5’8″ 162 lbs., smart playing-making forward has skated in 246 AHL games with affiliate Manchester Monarchs scoring a handy 75 goals and 95 assists with a +19 rating.

In four seasons of junior hockey in the WHL with Calgary Hitmen he absolutely tore up the score sheet with over 100 points in each of his last two years putting him at a 1.24 points-per-game and won the league title in 2010. His plus/minus was completely through the roof at a +103.

He also finished that campaign, both regular season and playoffs as the league’s assist and point leader and added CHL Top Scorer Award to the mix.

The 23-year has yet to realize his first NHL action and his smaller size may affect that possibility on a team that has a history of recalling bigger players.

martin-jones

Almost shockingly, undrafted 4th year net minder Martin Jones(31) has spent his entire pro career in Los Angeles KIngs‘ prospect system and will be riding with the organization for another two seasons as he just inked an extension through 2014/2015.

He was signed to an entry level deal with a couple of slide seasons as an 18-year old to lay claim to him though.

He’s coming off another campaign with affiliate Manchester Monarchs, where he set record highs in many categories including a phenomenal 56 games played (2nd most overall), wins with 27 but also 25 losses, 5 shutouts, 3347 minutes in the crease and 1601 saves to his credit.

The big 6’4″ but light 189 lbs. goaltender has yet to officially earned an NHL call-up in the juggernaut that was in net for the parent club until recently but was part of the team’s practice squad when they won the Stanley Cup in 2012.  He’s easily proving he is worth a look as he maintains a 2.46 GAA and .921 SV% in the minors through 136 AHL games.

He won a WHL Championship in his last season of junior hockey with Calgary Hitmen, plus was playoff MVP and top goaltender in the Memorial Cup and in the league for 2009/2010.

There is still that curtain of let’s see what this kid can do when he gets into a game with the “big boys” but the 23-year old seems to be on the right path.
