Chris-McKelvie

Albany Devils‘ assistant captain, undrafted 4th year left wing Chris McKelvie(16) looks very likely to set career highs in his second season under contract with the team.

In 31 AHL games he already has a new best 6 goals to go along with 6 helpers, which is only 4 off the mark and only two points away from tying the 14 he put up in 2012/2013.

This will be his first full season in the top development league after stint reassignments to Greenville Road Warriors in his rookie and sophomore campaigns and a pair of ECHL contests last year with Trenton Titans.

The 6’1″ 190 lbs. forward has also been invited to NHL training camps three of his four pro seasons. He was in two with New York Rangers before being sent back to Connecticut Whale and started his second run with Albany after an invite to join New Jersey Devils in their camp.

At 28-years old he may just starting to find his game late.

He would go on to elevate his game across the board in 2013/2014, skating 57 AHL games scoring 9 goals, 12 assists and 21 points with a +6 rating, all as projected.

The final season of his 2-year contract extension wouldn’t be quite as good for the winger as he struggled to get only 3 tallies and 5 helpers in a similar amount of games as the previous campaign.

All-in-all it was still good enough to keep him around for another run as the 30-year old has signed for 2015/2016 to stay in the Albany system.

Matt-Mangene

Undrafted center Matt Mangene(57) entered his third pro season with a bit of uncertainty where he would skate next.

He chose to take the one-year option with Florida Everblades of the ECHL for 2014/2015.

The 5’11” 190 lbs. forward was originally on a 2-year entry level deal with Philadelphia Flyers but was a minor Adirondack Phantoms‘ piece of a late season trade that shuffled him to New York Islanders‘ system, reporting exclusively to Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Set to become a restricted free agent in need of a new deal, he was left unqualified.

He appeared in more AHL games last season than he had in his rookie campaign but ended up with less points and a little more feist in his game.

The 25-year has shown flashes of scoring prowess in the past, especially in his final year at University Of Maine and early in Northeastern US Junior Hockey.

It’s a good bet the 25-year old will start putting up points on the score sheet once again in a league he’s familiar with from 20 games played (1-10-11) with Trenton Titans and Stockton Thunder but will it be enough to earn him a recall?

Original story: 9/27-14

After scoring 4 goals and 13 assists in 27 ECHL games, the converted defenseman was loaned after a couple of months in the lower league to Texas Stars and never left.

Six weeks in he was given an standard player contract.

As a blue liner he scored 2 goals and set new AHL career highs with 15 assists and 17 points in 36 games, while firing a 60 shorts on net from the point.

For 2015/2016 the now 26-year old signs a new deal to continue with Texas and will need to continue the hard work but is likely see his totals increase again.

kelly-zajac-1

Albany Devils‘ undrafted 2nd year center Kelly Zajac(11) is making a statement on the score sheet in his sophomore season with the team.

After being sidelined for a majority of his rookie year with a nagging lower body injury, limiting him to only 14 games (2 goals, 2 assists), he returned for 2013/2014 healthy and ready to contribute.

Appearing in 46 AHL games, he’s easily posted career highs with 8 goals, 22 assists and a +5 rating on a squad that’s poised to make a playoff run for the first time in a long while.

The not exactly huge 5’11” 175 lbs. forward was a point-per-game guy in his last two campaigns of college hockey at Union, helping them win the 2012 NCAA (ECAC) Championship.

He’s only been signed to a pair of 1-year minor league contracts but is definitely making a bid to get noticed and move up.

The 25-year old spent parts of his first season in the ECHL with Trenton Titans, most of the time to likely get some games under his belt, and was able to produce at a rate of 6 goals and 10 assists in 15 contests in the lower league.

He may not be sure where he will end up under a deal for his next campaign but should be able to score a training camp invite to show the higher ups what he can do.

Ryan Hayes

Undrafted 3rd year right wing Ryan Hayes(18) played for three different ECHL teams last season after being involved in a pair of trades that eventually brought him to Stockton Thunder to finish out the remainder of 2012/2013.

And what a finish it was. In 12 games he scored 5 goals and added another 6 assists bringing his totals to 14-13-27 in 40, which was under what he put up in his rookie campaign but close and in 23 less games played.

Great marks all around for the only 5’9″ 185 lbs. forward but once it hit playoff hockey time he stepped his scoring output to the next level.

In 23 Kelly Cup postseason match-ups he was able to strike for 9 tallies and 15 helpers while going a +8, good enough for 2nd overall in scoring.

Those postseason numbers were in line with what he attained in 22 OHL playoff games with Plymouth Whalers (12-13-25).

Very smartly Stockton taps into his scoring performance for another season signing him to a one-year deal.

It won’t be surprising to see the 24-year old earn his first AHL call-up or appear in a higher league training camp.

Undrafted 2nd year center/right wing Ian Slater(12) was signed to a contract with Adirondack Phantoms for his rookie season.

He started his pro career in the ECHL with affiliate Trenton Titans, where in 31 games he scored 7 goals and 3 assists with a +9 rating.

The 6′ 198 lbs. forward was recalled to the AHL right after the beginning of the year and would play out the regular season schedule with the team. He notched an assist and was a -9 in mostly limited fourth line use.

The 25-year old was never exactly a point scoring machine in college play at Western Michigan University but was team captain for his last couple of years and won a championship. He also provide lots of energy on the ice whenever he’s out there.

For his sophomore campaign he has decided to ink a deal with Orlando Solar Bears, the team just an hour up the road from his hometown.

He will likely be kept an eye on for a call-up and maybe even attend an AHL training camp to start.

Ian Slater

Undrafted, rookie defenseman Ryan Grimshaw(32) signed a deal to join Trenton Titans to start the first full season of his pro career.

He inked an ato with them after his college playing career playing three games with the team.

The 6′ 195 lbs. hard-nosed blue liner attended Toronto Marlies‘ training camp on an invite but was reassigned to the ECHL at the start of the season.

In 23 games he registed 3 goals and 3 assists before being recalled to the AHL at the beginning of the new calendar year.

On a pto with the Marlies, he proved he deserved a place on the roster in 16 games of gritty play and was upped to an spc to finish out the 2012/2013 season.

While up in the higher league, his rights were traded to South Carolina Stingrays to complete an earlier season swap.

He was recently reassigned to help them in their bid for the Kelly Cup.

The 23-year former Harvard Crimson captain will likely be back soon as it appears the quest for ECHL excellence will end in the first round.

Ryan Grimshaw

shane-harper

Philadelphia Flyers‘ undrafted 3rd year right wing, Shane Harper(11) has definitely had his ups and downs in the final season of his three-year entry level deal.

He started the season on AHL affiliate Adirondack Phantoms‘ roster after spending his entire sophomore campaign with the team, scoring a tidy 13 goals and 14 assists in 70 games.

The small-ish 5’10” 187 lbs. forward once again was in the plans for 2012/2013, but stumbled out of the gate and was utilized less in game situations due the overload of NHL players in the fold as the lockout dragged on.

Just after the new year, he was reassigned to ECHL affiliate Trenton Titans to see if he could regain that scoring touch. He spent only a week in the lower league with little to show, when summoned back up as the stalemate in the show thawed and the Phantoms lost a few key contributors.

He was still snake-bitten though, as he has only had 4 goals and 4 assists in 42 games to his credit, along with a -13 plus/minus on a squad that has been struggling to win.

The 24-year was once again sent back to the Titans, but this time flourished in a big way. He put up back-to-back hat tricks in a pair of big wins for a team out of the playoff hunt and was looking to tie a piece of ECHL history with a 3-in-3 performance.

He fell slightly short of the mark in his third attempt, scoring only one goal but adding three assists in another resounding effort. In 12 games, he has an opponent shattering 11 goals and 11 assists. He was a point-per-game guy in his rookie season with Greenville Road Warriors.

If recalled for another crack at keeping his spot through the remainder of the season, he will have to at least come close to duplicating his output.

Heading into restricted free agent status, it would seem likely that the Flyers would qualify him for another year.

Philadelphia Flyers‘ 4th round pick in the 2011 draft (#118 overall), German-born center Marcel Noebels(29) started his pro career in the ECHL with affiliate Trenton Titans.

He went to work right away scoring 11 goals and adding 19 assists in 31 games, was voted rookie of the month for December and picked to appear in the All-Star Game.

The 6’3″ 193 lbs. forward was unavailable to play though, as he was recalled to Adirondack Phantoms at the start of 2013 to continue scoring.

He’s not exactly there but has 7 goals and 6 assists in 25 games, which is still awfully good for your North American pro hockey debut.

His numbers in juniors were that of a point per game guy.

The 21-year old (as of March 14: Happy Birthday!) is signed to a 3-year entry level deal, keeping him in the system through 2015.

At the pace the Flyers are going this lockout shortened season, he may be worth a look in their lineup to see if he can give them some goal scoring punch over physical play, which they might have too much of on the current roster.

Philadelphia Flyers‘ undrafted rookie goaltender Cal Heeter(35) might be spending too much time in the “waiting” room before his next appearance in net with their AHL affiliate Adirondack Phantoms, where he has played the entire first half of his first pro season.

In 20 games he’s compiled a 7-11-1 record with a respectably decent 2.97 GAA and .906 SV% on a team that has been challenged to string together wins and sits near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

At 6’4″ 195 lbs. he’s a pretty big frame in there and moves pretty well, but the 24-year old just hit a logjam in the Flyers‘ system that sends him to the ECHL Trenton Titans for the first time.

He’ll likely take it in stride, play hard and looks to be part of at the very least the Phantoms‘ future.

His two-year entry level deal keeps him in the system through 2014.

Cal Heeter

Trenton Titans‘ 2nd year, undrafted defenseman Eric Baier(6) was recently called up to Providence Bruins for his first AHL stint of 2012/2013.

He’s played 23 games in the league with four different teams since finishing up his college career at nearby Providence College.

Although he only has an assist to his credit, the 6’2″ 210 lbs. blue liner has never light up the scoresheet and seems to be look at as more of a defensive zone specialist, although seems to be on the wrong end of plus/minus for the most part.

In 85 games with the Titans, the 24-year old has 6 goals and 17 assists on a team that has struggled to win games and keep pucks out of their net in the last couple of seasons, but as he continues to play and gain opportunities he will likely continue to settle his game.

Getting himself on a winning team couldn’t hurt either.
