Chad Costello(13) Allen Americans

4th year pro, undrafted forward Chad Costello(38) was lighting up the ECHL with Colorado Eagles before Springfield Falcons called him up to the AHL.

At the time of his promotion, he led the league in scoring with 16 goals and 32 assists in 30 games.

In four games, signed to a pto with the Falcons playing limited ice time, he failed to register any points before being released.

He wasted no time picking up where he left off in the lower league, as he exploded for a hat trick and added an assist in his first game back with the Eagles.

Despite missing a couple weeks of play, he still leads the ECHL in scoring by eight points.

He’s not exactly the biggest guy out there at 5’9″ 170 lbs but has worked hard and earned his way up through the ranks. He started as a rookie in the ill-fated IHL before moving on to a couple of seasons in the Central Hockey League and this season at age 25 to the ECHL for 2011/2012.

Heading into his 8th season after finishing off an unreal first year with Allen Americans that saw him claim his first ECHL scoring title with a mind-boggling 125 points, including a fifth all-time 84 assists and tied for league second 41 goals with a +43 rating, he will stay put and look to win another title.

He was also named to the first team All-Star squad and won the 2015 Championship. He wound up scoring 9 goals and 19 assists in 25 postseason contests and fired an absolutely crazy 234 shots on net in a complete 72-game schedule.

This all came after an injury-plagued 2013/2014 that saw him play in only 14 games first for St. Charles Chill, then Ontario Reign.

He stayed on for two stints with Colorado Eagles but was recalled and signed by Bridgeport Sound Tigers for most of his second campaign only rejoining the team for its short playoff bid.

His totals of 3 tallies and 9 helpers in 21 AHL games showed he could compete in the higher level of hockey. He also got his first 4 assists on recall with Worcester Sharks in late 2011/2012.

At 28-years old he’s likely not going to be slowing down his scoring touch any time soon but it remains to be seen if he will score another recall considering his veteran status.

We could easily see him finishing out his career in a few years over in Europe and still putting up big numbers.

Harrison Reed(19) Dresdner Eislowen

6th year right wing Harrison Reed(19) has decided it’s time to go try his game overseas joining up with Eispiraten Crimmitschau of DEL2, the second tier pro hockey league in Germany.

He’s coming off a season of career highs with Stockton Thunder of the ECHL. In 46 games he put up 21 goals and 24 assists. It was his first time hitting the 20/20 club. He also added another 9 tallies and 11 helpers in 23 Kelly Cup Playoff games getting the team all the way to the finals before falling.

Originally a Carolina Hurricanes‘ 3rd round pick in the 2006 draft (#93 overall), he signed a 3-year entry level deal and joined their then affiliate Albany River Rats for 119 games before being involved in a trade that made him property of Colorado Avalanche for the last season of his contract.

He joined Lake Erie Monsters for 2010/2011 but was also reassigned for about half the time to Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League.

The 6’1″ 192 lbs. forward plays with bigger size than his measurements might indicate but was never really able to connect in the AHL, where in 208 games he has 11 goals and 16 assists but is a terrible -39 overall.

For his first season as an unrestricted free agent he signed a contract to play with Toledo Walleye but also received a pair of call-ups to Houston Aeros and the familiar Lake Erie team. He would also rejoin them again last season for 14 contests.

The 25-year should be able to continue his domination on the score sheet, which may bring him back to North America or help continue his rise in Europe.

After a year in the 2nd tier German league potting an astounding 40 goals and 50 assists in 54 games and another 27 points in 17 playoff contests, he was awarded forward of the year title for his efforts.

He decided to make the jump up to DEL signing with Straubing Tigers and came back down to earth with 25 points in 50 games.

For 2015/2016 he circles back to DEL2 inking for a season with Dresdner Eislowen.

At 27-years old now he very well could explode on the score sheet once again and look to move on to a different country’s top league.

Gary Steffes(25) Bakersfield Condors

4th year undrafted center Gary Steffes(25) has played under contract with Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League for all three years of his pro career.

He’s skated in 169 games scoring 61 goals and 68 assists but ran up an abysmal -26 plus/minus.

The 6’1″ 185 lbs. forward was called up by Lake Erie Monsters, where he appeared in 16 AHL games pocketing his first higher league tally and added 2 assists.

He also appeared in training camp with Oklahoma City Barons but was released before the start of the regular season.

For 2013/2014 he has signed a one-year deal to suit up for Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL.

The 26-year old is likely a shoe-in for another recalled especially if he can put up numbers in the higher double A league.

Alec Kirschner(17) Elmira Jackals

Undrafted 5th year center Alec Kirschner(17) has worked his way through the ranks from low double A in the former IHL, a few games in Central Hockey League and 36 games over the last couple of seasons in the single A, Federal Hockey League with Danbury Whalers to scoring another contract with Elmira Jackals of the ECHL for 2012/2013.

The 5’10” 180 lbs. forward has easily proven he’s far too skilled for FHL with 46 goals and 38 assists or a pair of points per game player with a combined +47 plus/minus rating. The soon-to-be 26 year old is deserving of a shot in the higher league despite only posting a pair of assists in 32 games with Wheeling Nailers and the Jackals.

But still it’s an interesting team re-signing of a player on the cusp for what will be a more competitive season than usual.

Chris Cloud(39) Ontario Reign

Undrafted 4th season right wing Chris Cloud(39) re-signs with Ontario Reign to return to the ECHL team for a second straight season, a first in his pro career that’s taken him in on what continues to be an interesting journey.

He began with Wheeling Nailers but after only three appearances was released and quickly jumped to join Central Hockey League‘s Amarillo Gorillas for the remainder of his rookie campaign.

The feisty 5’11” 186 lbs. forward started his sophomore year inking a deal with Tulsa Oilers but was again waived by the team he started the season with only to be quickly picked up by another suitor, Bloomington Prairie Thunder (r.i.p.).

It wasn’t until 2011/2012 that he found a more permanent hockey residence, signing a one-year contract with the Reign, where he arguably enjoyed his best season matching career highs in goals, assists and points; and eclipsed his former penalty minute high mark by 50.

The then 23-soon-to-be 24 year old also earned a pair of AHL call-up with Manchester Monarchs that he put to good use in 10 games and 19 pims in a limited fourth line role.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see him in the Monarchs‘ forthcoming training camp.

Jack Combs(11) Colorado Eagles

In his 3rd pro season, undrafted wing Jack Combs(11) has been tearing up the scoring sheet pretty much regardless of what AA league he’s playing in.

At the time of his call up to the AHL by Worcester Sharks he lead the ECHL in scoring (17 goals 20 assists in 23 games) with Colorado Eagles.

He scored on his first shift with the team and has struck for 3 goals and 3 assists in 5 games.

No doubt, if he continues on this pace, he will remain with the team for the foreseeable future.

In 6 previous AHL games over the last couple of years, he never tallied a goal and only had one assist.

He finished 2nd in scoring and first in goals with 40 for Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League in 2010/2011 and 10th overall in the league.

9/19-12: Maybe in a bit of a surprising move, the 24-year old re-signs to start 2012/2013 with Colorado Eagles of the ECHL.

He completed last season under contract with the AHL Sharks scoring 16 goals and 14 assists in 50 games.

The one downside was a poor -9 plus/minus.

Rob Hisey(26) Liwest Black Wings Linz / Bridgeport Sound Tigers

7th year, undrafted center Rob Hisey(26) has played most of his career in Europe until the last couple of seasons when he returned to North America and skated with Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League and Springfield Falcons in ’09/’10 and last year he was the 2nd leading scorer on Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Well, time’s up again for pro hockey here, as he’s signed with Liwest Black Wings Linz of Austria’s Erst Bank Eishockey Liga (Austrian Hockey League with sponsorship).

The league is already almost finished with their preseason and the regular season starts the second week of September.
