Kris Newbury(11) is quickly becoming one of my favorite players.
He’s basically a point per game guy in the AHL and doesn’t ever back down from mixing it up when called upon.
He’s had four call-ups this season with the Rangers for 11 games but produced only 1 assist with the team in the NHL though.
Undrafted, rookie Whale goalie Cameron Talbot(33) eyes the face-off. He’s having an impressive 1st season as a Rangers‘ prospect.
First year, undrafted Sharks‘ goalie Carter Hutton(30) has had one excellent roller coaster ride of a season, where he planned on sitting bench a lot while 2nd year Worcester goalie Alex Stalock(32) played a ton (again). Well, Stalock goes down with season-ending injury, Niittymaki goes down in San Jose and Hutton is off to the west coast for some NHL hockey bench riding.
He’s back in the AHL and the Sharks are looking to ride him to a playoff spot in the Atlantic.
Jeremy Colliton(21) took a gamble to come back to the US to play for the AHL affiliate of the team that drafted him, the only organization he’s ever played with, New York Islanders.
He was on a pto but by the end of November he signed a 2-way deal with the Isles.
He’s played 15 games and has a few points, which isn’t exactly the stuff big deals are made of but he’s shown a lot of growth this season, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the young NYI team bring him back for a 6th year.
Jesse Joensuu(6) should probably be a full-time NHL player (31 games, 4 goals and a pair of assists) but doesn’t use his massive 6’4″ 212 lbs. frame nearly as much as he needs to. In the off season he will have to bulk up and hope the Isles extend one more year to him, so he can deliver on the promise of being a 2nd round pick (#60 overall) in the 2006 draft. I think he can do it.
Kyle Greentree(37) was brought to Hershey in the off-season to fill the gap that the team was dealt when Alexandre Giroux departed for Edmonton/Oklahoma City.
He’s been nicely prolific, which makes me wonder why he has yet to score a look with the Capitals this season.
Since his return to Worcester, 2nd year forward John McCarthy(7) has started to light the lamp with some big goals. He’s played three times as many games in San Jose this year but may be back in the AHL for a spell as the NHL lineup is looking tougher to crack.
Veteran goalie Nolan Schaefer(31) became expendable in the Bruins‘ organization after they made a trade to secure Anton Khudobin for the Providence net in the stretch run towards a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs. He hasn’t been officially traded but is on loan to Hershey.
He’s already fairing much better than he did with the P-Bruins but has yet to be outfitted with a new mask.
8th year pro, Brian Fahey(5) received his first call-up to the NHL this season appearing in 7 games with the Capitals. He’s always been a steady hand on defense throughout his minor league career. He also recorded the hardest slapshot at this past AHL All-Star game, although it will go down with an asterisk beside his name for being allowed a third chance.
15-year pro Sheldon Souray(7) was loaned by Edmonton, the team he signed a 5-year, $27 million contract with 4 years ago, to Hershey, where he has played when not injured for all of this season. What’s wrong with Oklahoma City?
For each game he plays (or doesn’t) in the AHL, he scores $67,500. Not as much as Wade Redden does but more than Jeff Finger.
