Undrafted defenseman Ryan Wheeler(6) signs fairly quickly after his college team, University Of Connecticut Huskies was eliminated from their deepest career run in Hockey East tournament history.

The 6′ 190 lbs. blue liner had a modest best tying his 2 goals and 4 assists, but elevating to a new high points of 6 in his senior year with a handy +4 rating.

He signs to play out 2021/2022 with Iowa Heartlanders and in his ECHL debut he notched a point, an assist.

The 24-year old Lancaster, NY, twice New Jersey Titans‘ d-man of 20+ points should be able to play a good game, if he can get on a decent enough team.

He was on for his rookie run 2022/2023, scored 1 goal and 10 assists in 59 games, but was released and sign by  Cincinnati Cyclones to finish off the frame.

For 2023/2024, he’s setting new sights and signs a 1-year minor league deal with Adirondack Thunder, bringing him maybe a little closer to home.

After 61 games, getting 10 goals and 12 assists with a -1 rating, he skates 17 playoff matchups, scoring 4 goals and 1 assists with a +2 and he will re-sign to stay in a Thunder sweater, 2024/2025.

He would serve as team captain in his 3rd year, but signs with down the road team, Springfield Thunderbirds for 2026/2027, hoping to stick at the higher level.

RPI Engineers‘ junior defenseman Max Smolinski(24) enters the transfer portal after a college high 5 goals and 10 assists in 35 games to next skate at St. Cloud State University Huskies as a senior, 2025/2026.

The 6′ 185 lbs. blue liner from Broomfield Hills, MI did 2 good years of juniors before school.

His heading closer to home for the “final” year for the 23-year old son of former NHL-er Bryan Smolinski.

He wraps up at his new school with a new college best 6 goals and 12 assists in 35 games and takes these totals to a 1st pro contract with Cincinnati Cyclones.

In 17 games, he gets 2 goals and 3 assists with a +4 rating and is asked back for his official rookie season, 2026/2027 to remain a Cyclones.

University Of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs‘ senior left wing Scout Truman(19) grabbed a goal scoring high with 14 and tied the 21 points he recorded in his sophomore year of exact opposite totals at UMass-Lowell Riverhawks.

He transferred as a junior.

The 5’10” 181 lbs. forward did 4 years of juniors, 2 AJHL and 2 USHL, where he scored well in his 2nd season of both.

From Lethbridge, AB, the 23-year signed a 1st pro deal with Savannah Ghost Pirates, getting a 1st ECHL assist in his debut.

He will need a new contract for 2026/2027.

For his rookie season, he decides to head over to Ligue Magnus and signs with Diables Rogues de Briancon.

4th year defenseman Miles Gendron(10) exchanges 2 contracts with Colorado Eagles, including 2 goals and an assist in 15 AHL games and 116 ECHL appearances to a new adventure for 2022/2023, signing with Storhamar of Fjordkraft-ligaen.

Originally an Ottawa Senators‘ 3rd round pick in the 2014 draft (#70 overall), he only skated parts of his rookie season in the system before moving on.

The 6’2″ 181 lbs. blue liner skated only one year of juniors, winning the 2015 BCHL Championship with Penticton Vees, amassing 12 assists in 22 playoff games before heading off to school.

He did 4 years, including serving as senior captain at University Of Connecticut Huskies.

The still young 25-year old should do very well in Norway’s top league.

After 19 games with 3 goals, 5 assists and a +9 rating, he decides to return and signs with Greenville Swamp Rabbits for 2023.

He takes an impressive little run into the playoffs with his new club, but will look to branch out again and head over to the EIHL for 2023/2024, signing with 2 time champs, Belfast Giants.

In just 19 games, he didn’t actually connect as he would have thought, so returns home on a deal with the Swamp Rabbits.

He plays 60 games and that season goes better for him to sign as 1st time captain with Reading Royals in 2025/2026.

In 45 games, he gets 2 goals and 12 assists with a +9 rating to get himself a new deal to stay a Royals in 2026/2o27.

Holy Cross College Crusaders‘ senior captain, right wing Grayson Constable(13) is heading off to play an independent schedule in 2023/2024 for Long Island University Sharks.

The 6’2″ 201 lbs. forward scored a college career best 6 assists and 12 points last season.

For juniors, he skated a couple of frames in the BCHL, but really came alive after switching to the AJHL, hooking up a captain for Bonnyville Pontiacs.

The 25-year old Lethbridge, AB native does better with his new college club, scoring new bests 9 goals and 9 assists.

He signs with Coventry Blaze of the EIHL for his rookie campaign, 2024/2025.

In his 2nd run of 44 games, he scores a new best 16 goals and 23 assists, but decides at age 28-years old to retire.

We shall see what is next.

Clarkson University Golden Knights‘ junior defenseman, assistant captain Jordan Power(23) takes his game through the transfer portal and will arrive at Minnesota State University-Mankato Mavericks for his senior year 2023/2024.

He takes a college career best 11 assists and sophomore season tying 11 points to his new school.

The 6’1″ 187 lbs. blue liner produced 29 assists as captain of Lincoln Stars in his 2nd USHL session.

From Ottawa, ON, the 21-year should have fun playing hockey in the CCHA.

He signs with Greenville Swamp Rabbits after tournament play is up and scores 1 assist in 6 games with a +2 rating and will be with them for his rookie season, 2025/2026, as he signs on to stay.

After maybe a bit of a slow start with 1 assist in 13 games, he decides to sign with Coventry Blaze to see if he can bring his game up in the EIHL.

He scores 8 goals and 17 assists in 33 games with a +11 rating, but for 2026/2027, he signs with rivals Guildford Flames.

Undrafted rookie defenseman Matt Cairns(22) signs a one-year AHL contract with Rochester Americans for 2021/2022 after completing his senior year at University Of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.

The big 6’3″ 213 lbs. blue liner skated three seasons at Cornell University Big Red, but we think saw the writing on the wall of a suspended 2020/2021, so entered the transfer portal to continue playing college hockey.

He won an OJHL Championship in his 2nd year of juniors in the league with Georgetown Raiders, scoring all bests 9 goals and 24 assists for 33 points, then added another 3 goals and 16 assists in 21 playoff games to the title.

The Mississauga, ON native would next try his hand at American junior hockey, signing on with Fargo Force, but leaving after 17 USHL games to join Powell River Kings and would keep scoring 2 goals and 14 assists in 18 BCHL games.

We’re not sure how much the 23-year old will be able to connect with points in his new top notch pro league, but do think he’ll be able to shut down offense as necessary.

He was mostly reassigned down to Cincinnati Cyclones for his 1st season, scoring 2 goals and 14 assists with a +21 rating.

For 2022/2023, he re-signs to stay in Ohio and should have another good ECHL year.

1 goal and 5 assists in 45 games with a +17 rating, then 11 playoff match ups, and he is invited to return again for 2023/2024.

Splitting his time between affiliates, his league rights get traded to Maine Mariners, but things get confusing and before you can blink he is going to Indy Fuel for some future rights considerations, so was wanted in the midwest.

He actually sticks through 49 games, 3 goals and 13 assists with a +13 rating, so does pretty well for himself, but is heading to the IceHL, signing for 2024/2025 with Asiago.

We think he does really well in this top Austria league.

He scores pretty decently, but is off on the +/-, so figures he will do better in Sweden’s tier 2 HockeyAllsvenskan and signs with IF Bjorkloven.

After 27 games with only 1 goal, but a +14 rating, he decides to leave for HC Bolzano.

He picks up 5 assists there, but continues to move on and signs with Esbjerg Engergy of Metal Ligaen for 2026/2027.

Rookie right wing Cole Tymkin(91) was doing nicely with 4 goals and 5 assists in 38 games with a +3 rating, but found himself traded late to Rapid City Rush.

In 11 ECHL games with his new club, he has 1 goal.

The 6’1″ 201 lbs. forward did 5 years at Brock University Badgers upon completion of his junior career.

From Rainy River, ON, the 27-year old will need a new deal for 2026/2027.

It’s no big guess, he gets signed by the Rush to continue in 2026/2027.

New Jersey Devils‘ 4th year defenseman John Marino(5) was involved in a trade that sent him to the team from 3-year club Pittsburgh Penguins, where he twice notched 20+ assists, with a career high 24 last season.

The 6’1″ 181 lbs. blue liner is on the hook for another 5-years for the 6-year deal he signed a year and a half ago worth an average of $4.4M AAV through 2026/2027.

Originally an Edmonton Oilers‘ 6th round pick in the 2015 draft (#154 overall), but somewhat oddly traded before he ever got started.

The North Easton, MA native spent 3 years at nearby Harvard University Crimson, amassing an amazing +/- numbers before turning pro.

6th year d-man becomes the #1 for the new Utah Hockey Club, who pick him up for some draft options and he gets a 3-year deal moving forward.

Rebranded Utah Mammoth for his 2nd season, he pots some 32 assists in 80 games with a monster +42 rating.

He signs a new to start when his current deal ends in 2027/2028 8-year $6.75M AAV deal to stay.

Brown University Bears‘ Russian-born, sophomore left wing Ivan Zadvernyuk(7) scored a college best 8 goals and 14 assists last season that he takes into the transfer portal to next go play at rivals Cornell University Big Red as a junior in 2026/2027.

The 6’3″ 215 lbs. forward came over initially to finish up youth hockey and did 2 NAHL years, really exploding scoring in his 2nd with 21 goals and 43 assists in 59 games with a +29 rating.

We look for the 22-year old to continue to up his ECAC play.
