Pittsburgh Penguins‘ 5th round pick in the 2015 draft (#137 overall) Czech Republic-born 5th year center Dominik Simon(49) was selected after he put up career numbers for Czech Extraliga HC Plzen scoring 18 goals and 12 assists in 52 games.
He played his whole junior career for home city team HC Sparta Praha before turning pro in 2012/2013, where he split time in the top league and Czech2 with HC Litomerice.
The highly regarded 5’11” 176 lbs. forward has suited up for 5 NHL games over the course of the 2 seasons he’s been in North America and has a pair of assists with a -1 rating in mostly fairly limited ice time.
As a rookie he put up some pretty outstanding marks grabbing a team leading 25 goals and 23 assists with affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and in the current campaign he has a tied for 2nd, new best 31 assists in 68 AHL games but there’s still a bit of time to raise those numbers some.
The 22-year old is signed through 2017/2018 on a three-year entry level deal.
He was a very late cut from last training camp before being reassigned though the parent club has only brought him up for games as the regular season was winding down.
Given an extended look it will be interesting to see how he does, fits in, but there’s also the possibility that he’s been eclipsed by some other prospects, so needs to continue to elevate his game to gain notice.
